There are 5 different difficulty levels of play. There is beginner, light, standard, heavy and oni. If you are a beginner who has never played before, I suggest you starting on beginner or light mode. If you are just intermediate, then you should maybe try standard. If you are an expert, you should play on heavy or oni mode.

In this picture, you can see that I circled the heavy on the bottom. Heavy mode means that the song is pretty hard. They arrows come up to the top of the screen pretty fast on some songs. There are a lot of them too. They range in the 300s to probably the 600s. For the other modes like beginner, light, and standard, they come up a bit slower and a lot less often. They are much easier than heavy and oni. For oni, they come up very often on somes songs. Some of the oni songs have less steps than heavy. You can see some examples of heavy and oni songs in the videos section of my site.

Here is an example of a song on light mode. As you can see, the arrrows come up quite slowly and there are very few coming at one time. It should be very easy, unless you are a beginner at DDR.

Here is an example of a song on standard mode. On standard mode, you start to see some 8th notes coming up. Personally, I don't think they are that hard, unless there are a lot of them coming up. I would have to say that this song probably is a very easy standard song. If you are an intermediate player, you should be able to pass it.

Here is an example of a song on heavy. As you can see, there are a lot more 8th notes than there are on standard. The song seems like it goes a lot faster than it does on beginner, light, and standard. To pass this song, you have to be a very advanced player. This song does not look like a very hard song if you can play heavy.
